When Molly Townsend, original founder of Second Chance Rescue stables, moved to California to offer her help to a small horse rescue coalition, Amaia Pintantes stepped up in her place. Weeks afterwards, the town of Bayard, Kentucky was stricken with a rare strain of influenza just before a hard, early winter. Many of the townsfolk and their horses passed away or were forced to move, and Bayard dwindled in size.

Can Bayard return to the maps? Or will all of Molly’s hard work and ambition be lost?

and so, they had returned. like sheep flocking to a shepherd, the rabid humans had swarmed to bayard once more, even in the dead of winter. the grass was gone, and hay was scarce. grain was the only sustenance left, and even then, large trucks came to bring them in from other areas of the country. time passed slowly, and with each passing day, newlings arrived. and it pleased her to see that they were intelligent enough to leave her be. she had not broken their fences, had not threatened to escape the enclosure they dared confine her to. she endured life in that massive pasture, against the battering winds and furious gusts, and ate graciously the food they provided her with. a peace offering, perhaps. they came every so often, however, and darkness would cloak her eyes, and she would awaken to nothing new, as if she had just awoken from a bad dream. her feet would feel better, however, and there would be a tiny sore spot on her neck for a few hours. and each time, arcana got just a little smarter, making that small, mousy girl work harder to point her gun at her, to bring that darkness about again. too bad all humans weren't that smart.

the wind blew hard that day, and snow covered the earth up to arcana's great knees. the massive belle had her haunches turned to the wind, and left two trails behind her as she plowed through the stuff, getting ever frustrated with the numbness in her fetlocks. her pelt had thickened, and warmth was sustained throughout most of her physique, but the ice melted against her cannon bones, and she felt dampness chill her bones. her heart thudded in her ears, and hunger overcame her sides. tiny auds fought their way upward from underneath a heavy blanket of thick forelock, and she found the rumble of an engine as the mousy provider of food fought her way back to where she had come. a thick neck pulled an equally huge head skyward, and the heavens tore apart with a masochist bellow. the earth shook, and the trees shuddered. the soil parted as great hooves collided with the frozen tundra. muscular limbs heaved the massive beastress into the familiar shelter. the cold was not so bitter here, and she sought out the bucket she knew would contain the faith of grain, and the sweetness of warm water. and she knew she could survive this great and terrible winter without this, without this kind offering, but found it quite entertaining that the humans sought to serve her, to please her with the offerings of neutrality and peace. and it was good enough. for now.

the light returned to her dilated pupils as arcana emerged from the shack amaia had provided her, so that she might seek shelter from the biting winds and chilling storms. the giant mare strode along the earth, each stride long, each step gargantuan enough to send tremors through the earth. had there been wildlife in this wintertime prison, they would have scattered at her stride, and she would have delighted in chasing them across the frozen wasteland. today, there were newcomers, and as a cascading fall of feathery flag fell into the mare's visage, she peered through the strands to see that two new stallions had been captured, and were behaving like ninnies, behaving so prim and proper. nares flared to exhaust a grunt of disgust. her crown was tossed to the celeste, and her lips found the gate. teeth gnawed at the iced-over latch, leaning on three limbs, content to suck and lick on this block of ice until the chill of metal would meet her tongue and she would trod off to find some other source of entertainment.

The girl trudged through the deep drifts of frozen liquid, her tiny hands pulling the thick jacket closer to her chin. The winter had gotten worse, and there was yet more to come. Even she knew that, and she knew very little nowadays. She wasn't an invalid, nor was she slow. She was simply uninformed because she chose to be. The less she knew of the outside world, the less chance there was of her understanding her brother's secluded act. She didn't want to become her brother. She didn't want to crawl into a dark hole because of the cruelties of the world. She wanted to block it out and live the day as an innocent, as the innocent. She could think of no one anymore who was an innocent. Everyone was caught up in the problems of the world, never satisfied with their own problems. They didn't understand that theirs should be enough. They critisized her because she didn't feel the need to look for more issues to deal with.

But none of that mattered now. Now, all that mattered was getting enough feed to the horses before they starved. Her father provided the money to keep her filly healthy. Why couldn't he send just a bit more for another horse? She knew of three that needed a home, needed someone to look after them. Two were new, stallions. Beautiful, promising stallions that were sure to find a home soon enough. Then there was the mare. Nicky had only watched her from afar, always out of earshot, and usually out of eyeshot. She would watch as Amaia fed and medicated the mare, and when no one was looking, when the mare was unconscious, Nicky would sneak under the fence for a quick stroke of her astounding nape before again slipping under the wood and escaping, never seen. Though the mare had never seen her, or never took notice to her, she had bonded with the Shire. Subtly she had listened, learning her name, her problems, her personality. Arcana. The beautiful, inhumanely-broken mare.

Well, if anyone could fix her, Nicole believed she could. And even if she couldn't, she had to try. She couldn't bear to watch the stunning creature go to waste in a pasture all alone. The mare didn't seem to mind, but Nicole couldn't stand it. An equine as wonderful as that shouldn't be allowed to sit alone forever, visited only at feeding time. Whether the mare wanted it or not, Nicky would show her companionship. They both needed it.

Finally, Nicole reached the fence post, and, like so many times before, she slipped under. Only this time, the mare wasn't medicated. She wasn't unconscious. She was fully aware of her surroundings, and the strange little invalid sneaking in. Nicole wasn't stupid, though. She made sure there was plenty of space between her and the mare. She wasn't going to chase the mare, she wasn't going to frighten her. She was going to keep her distance until the mare seemed ready to comply. There didn't seem to be another way with this one.

the water dribbled down her chin, droplets running between whiskers, falling from her jaw. mandible worked as she gnawed on what was left of her ice block, and the mare squealed when her teeth hit metal. the horrid, grinding noise had startled her, and she leaped backward, head shaking side-to-side with disgust. angry with the contraption, arcana rose upon her hind end, striking at the thing until it shattered, feeble from cold and breaking with no problems. the gate swung open, and arcana took a long, cool gaze at the outside world. it had always been available to her, and so she found no delight in this open freedom. until now, the gusts had been freezing her haunches, but with a shift in wind, a scent fell upon her nares. a sickeningly sweet, stingy odor that said nothing other than human. audits were sewn to her poll, and arcana's jaw fell open. her trachea shook, and a split second later, an angry shriek was accompanied by thundering hooves. the ground seemed to rupture, and arcana, barefoot because she would rip her shoes off if shod, slid across the frozen ground, piercing orbs set on this new child, this pale and fragile babe that had dared enter her territory. what a dumb, incapable creature she was. her teeth began to click, and angry hisses emerged from her throat. her nape snaked out, reaching for the girl as she spun toward her, fighting for traction on the frozen turf. catching herself on a dry spot, arcana flung all one-thousand and four-hundred pounds of her physique at nicole, launching herself at her. ragged tassels were ripped from her visage, and the shaggy beast fell upon the fence. inevitably, the human had moved, and the entire fence swayed as arcana battered it, the bottom board snapping as her forelimbs thrashed and struck. an angry bellow echoed from her girth, and the infuriated ess spun upon her haunches, racing along the fence line, always losing traction with her barefooted hooves, yet making her way toward the open gate, just a clip up the fence. her mind spun, and the mare was bothered with this.. child. why, in the dead of winter, would a frail-looking, sickly thing dare come out, in this weather, to step into the lair of a nefarious creature ? humans would never make sense to her.

Nicole stood still as she looked at the shattered gate. It swung loosely, offering the mare an easy ticket to nowhere. For a moment, the equine glanced outward, and Nicky was sure the mare would bolt. She bolted alright, but not in the direction Nicole thought she would. As the mare's dark eyes focused on her, Nicky went pale. Far more pale than she normally was, anyway. With a scream, the beast rushed for the girl, only anger etched in her orbs. The brunette stood still, frozen with terror and cold. As the mare drew closer, she skidded to the side. The fence next to her splintered almost immediately, as though a gunman had blasted it with a .55 magnum. But Nicky didn't scream. She ducked her head and shielded her face, all the while skidding to the side, away from the fence.

And with that, all was still. The girl peeked out from between her arms and saw the creature rushing for freedom, auds pinned in fury. Nicky knew she had to get that door shut, but she knew she had to stay alive too. Save the horse, live to tell about how she got out? Save the horse, live to tell about how she got out? God, choices were hard. Screw thinking.

Nicole felt her thin legs pushing beneath her, slipping on the ice but gaining speed. She knew there was no way she could reach the fence now, but maybe she could herd the mare away from it.
Even if it meant towards her. Waving her arms as she ran, Nicky chased after the Draft horse. She tried to shout at the mare, but before she could, her feet slipped again on the ice. She tried to catch her balance, but failed. She gasped as her back hit the ground first, knocking the wind out of her. Almost immediately after, her head cracked against the ice, sending sparks flying in front of her eyes.

Nicky tried to sit up, the sound of thundering hooves keeping her going. Arms quivering, the brunette lifted herself off the ground, only to fall to her knees again. Shaking her head slightly, the girl crawled towards the fence and lifted herself up, all the while trying to locate just where the mare was.

what a game this was ! a race ? arcana gave the girl a race alright. upon noticing that she seemed to be determined to in fact beat her to the gate, the rage was accompanied by amusement. but then, a motion caught her eye, and she swiveled on her haunches, still in motion. she did not account for the ice, however, and fell square on her side. she grunted, fighting gravity and the elements to regain her composure, but the ice was difficult. limb by limb, the mare rose, and stood, legs splayed out, carefully navigating the terrain; terrific fury flashed behind her dark orbs, and again, the flow of ashen lock dampened her vision, but unrelenting hatred filled in the gaps. and then, there was a soft 'uh' and a thunk, and arcana's audits twitched, but never left their place, pinned to the back of her skull. and it was maliciously delicious -- mother nature had dealt nicole a bad hand, too, and she looked down and out for the count. the mare started for the gate, intending to escape through it and destroy the laconic child. her eye was caught again by movement, this time by the child pulling herself skyward by the fence.

her barrel shook as the mare snapped her teeth, glaring happily at the child. her time was now -- this would be revenge. weight shifted onto her haunches, and the mare launched - and quite literally launched herself - in nicole's direction. three strides later, the beast collided with the fence, planks bending beneath her momentous weight. a good majority of the fencing sagged, and arcana unleashed a deep, ungodly bellow from the depths of her cavernous girth. tinted ivorns sought to grasp anything they could, to rip the flesh from this malicious being. she thrust her bulk onto her hind end, and, lunging at her, a series of attacks followed. she nipped, kicked her forelegs, neck coiled backward with her head tucked into her crest, only to spring forward, lashing out at the child. and the ice gave way. arcana's hind daggers slid forward toward the fence, and the ess's bulk fell backward. the windows on the barn rattled with the thunderous crash. the snow fell from nearby branches. rabbits fled. and the earth was still. arcana lay on her back, a guttural moan escaping her maw. her head rolled, and she flipped onto her side. limbs twitched as she fought to rise, blackness splotching her eyesight. agony splintered her skull, and the mare felt heat, scorching warmth roll between her ears, eyes, and drip off her nose. blood stained the snow, a startling contrast of white and red at the grayed hooves of the shire. and all hell paled in contrast to her fury.

she was up, and she was gone. her vocals escalated, and she was screeching, bucking wildly as she tore across the pasture. her front end would rise with a stride, and her powerful hindquarters would thrust her skyward. all four hooves would be off the ground, and she'd land, and twist and spin, furious with whatever had forced her to the ground. and her eyes locked on nicole, and it was over. with huge, ground-eating strides, the mare raced for nicole. the thick ice splintered beneath her hooves, and forced terrain upward, giving her ever more traction. there was no fence between them now, nothing to hold her back, no one to tell her otherwise. death rose with the crows, and the ravens cawed with glee; arcana had awakened.

Petite girl stood precariously next to the fence, knuckles white with her strong grip. This had been one of her worst ideas ever. But surely the mare had to run out of energy soon. Surely she had to get used to the strange nymph that had entered her territory. Didn't she? A clatter of hooves forced the dazed girl to look upward, and looming before her was the gargantuan form of the angered beast. For a moment there was calm, and then, all in a single instant, everything sprung into action. Nicole screamed, the mare lunged, and the birds cheered with glee. The rodeo had started.

The girl ducked her head as the mass of muscle catapulted at her. The ground and fence rumbled when the mare reached her destination. For a split second, Nicole had hope the offended vix would simply turn around and head for freedom after a single shot. But she did not. Large cranium struck out, ivories tearing Nicky's jacket. Instinct told her to jerk away as fast as she could, and she did. Still dizzy, she ripped her arm out of the grasp of the monster, caught herself with the momentum, and tumbled to the ground. The barrage of furious terrors continued as she fell. The purebred mustang's ivories again lashed at her, ripping a hole in her forearm. The no-longer-hopeful miss clutched her arm in pain, the blood streaming lightly from between her fingers. Talons struck the air, hitting the brunette square in the shoulder. Once again, the mare's shadow next to her rose, and Nicole winced for what was sure to be her last breath. But instead, the sound of shattered earth arose, and the mare was down.

Nicole stood daintily, watching the mare rest on the ground. Crystalline snow became tainted with her blood, and Nicole knew she would be killed. Whether by the damaged lady before her or the furious lady that ran the place, she didn't know. But either way, she was dead. The girl's shoulder throbbed as she took a step away from the fallen creature. She was sure it was broken, she probably had a concussion, and she would need stitches for her arm. But she was alive. She had to take advantage of that, right? As she turned to run, her feet refused to move. She had come to get the mare used to company. Could she quit after just one visit?

As the mare stirred once more, Nicky quickly decided the answer was No. She had come this far. If she quit now, what kind of person would she be? Could she really give up on a being such as a horse just because of a few scrapes and bruises? Certainly not.

Once again the beast screamed with fury. Nicole was hers now. The snow had been packed down with their struggle, making the charge all the easier. The girl searched frantically for a way out, a safety zone where she could not give up but not get hurt, either. As her eyes scanned the horizon momentarily, she felt absolutely stupid. Why hadn't she thought of it before? Surrounding the pen was a multitude of fall backs. Outdoor rings with stronger fences. Indoor rings with walls to keep the mare contained. Pastures galore. As long as the mare still had energy and she still had breath, there was always a way to keep going.

Now, how to get the mare into one of those?

Feet moving faster than she thought she could with her injuries, Nicole leaped over the fence, toward one of the indoor rings. She checked over her shoulder quickly to see if the mare had followed. Turning back to her task, she practically flew toward the nearest building. Shoes skidded in the snow, dragging to a stop just in front of the large doors. Shivering hands thrust both of them open, pushing them so that they were plenty big enough to allow a charging beast as big as the filly through without getting hurt.

Feeling accomplished, Nicole turned and stood in the doorway, awaiting whatever fury the filly felt she needed to deal upon the small child.

red-riddled sight found the girl, sought her out.. and what was this ? arcana was taken aback by the girl's escape. her steps faltered for a moment, and the radio towers that had stayed hidden, sewn to her skull beneath a waterfall of wild tresses, perked. curiosity flooded her vision, and the red she saw was fading slowly. her columns found themselves still, steam rising from her sweat-slicked body as she stood, watching.. and then the heat of the blood that tricked from the scrape on her poll flamed that red, and the dullness of alert curiosity disappeared all-together. she had let the child draw closer to the building than she had ever intended. war is war -- nothing more.

pistons fired, and the belle sped toward the girl, not hesitating when she drew closer to the foreign building, not hesitating when the doorway swept over her. her sides brushed the frame, and she whirled past nicky, skidding to a halt when a wall leaped up in front of her, appearing seemingly out of nowhere. her furious rage for the child was almost forgotten -- panic overwhelmed the mare as visions of a rotting cell arose from the crypts of her memory. her limbs shook as she spun ninety degrees, and three giant strides later, was faced with another wall.. a turn and six strides later, another wall.. maw parted, and the vocals that had admitted a war cry not long ago now emitted a cry of terror. her heart raced, and her eyes rolled with the agony of recall.

The child watched in sheer horror as the beast rushed in her direction. The sound of hoofbeats almost echoed the sound of her heart pounding. The chill of the winter had vanished long ago, replaced by the flames of adrenaline. Time seemed to move slowly for a moment. Nicky could see each hair on the equine's body raised in fury, whistling in the wind created by speed. Dark orbs pierced Nicole's eyes, focused on destroying the girl that had entered their domain. Puffs of glossy air rose from the creature's maw, fading into the sky.

And all at once everything sped up. The mare rocketed forward, catapulting towards the girl. Nicole dove out of the way, scraping her elbow on the cold turf beneath. The sound of wood meeting flesh splintered the silence of the room, hoofbeats only growing faster as they went deeper in. The girl heard the mare skid, trying to do the impossible and stop. Nicky looked up, watching in fear as the mare darted to avoid the walls. One by one she came upon wall after wall, each time running as though they would jump out and slaughter her. As the mare raced, she screamed. But not the scream she had let loose when Nicky had invaded her space. This scream was filled with dread rather than rage.

Knowing her wall was next to be met by the beast, Nicole raced toward the doors. Not sure whether this was the best idea or not, she quickly slid them shut, trapping her behind Hell's Gates with the Devil. Sure that the doors were shut tight, the girl fled to the center of the room. The more space she had to move, the better, right?

Awkwardly, Nicky looked away and spoke softly. Careful words of assurance floated toward the mare, though the girl doubted she was paying any attention. It's alright, girl. Nicky cooed. Don't worry.

Not sure quite what to do anymore, Nicole relaxed her shoulders and stood stock still. Making sure her focus was far from the large horse, she awaited whatever judgement the Devil wished to deal upon her.
